💵 COST OF LIVING: Hand sanitizer, jogging bottoms and hand weights are in, chocolate, ground coffee and sandwiches are out as metrics to calculate inflation. The Office for National Statistics uses a basket of 700 items to determine consumer economic trends. Spotted Alexander Watson.
Social media and platforms
🚦 FACEBOOK TRAFFIC: Publishers who reshare content on Facebook generate an addition two-third clicks on average according to Echobox. It found that most publishers only reshare small amounts of content (8%) on Facebook. Spotted Andrew Smith.
🚉 PUBLISHING PLATFORM: Facebook is set to test a new publishing platform with small independent publishers. The platform will be free-to-use, and will be integrated with Facebook Pages. It will include tools for journalists to build their own websites. Spotted Philippe Borremans.
🖼️ KIDSTAGRAM: Instagram currently blocks users aged under 13 from signing up for an account although many younger people use the app. Facebook is exploring a version targeted at the younger market with parental and messaging controls. Spotted Sophie Smith.
📈 LINKEDIN PLANNING: LinkedIn has published a campaign planning guide which includes worksheets to help plan a paid campaign on the platform. It focuses on a range of metrics including brand, engagement and web traffic. Spotted Andrew Smith.
🐤 TWITTER SECURITY: Twitter has updated its two-factor authentication so you can now log in with your physical security key on Android and iOS, like on desktop. Two-factor authentication should be used on all social media accounts as a minimum security policy. Spotted Alan Morrison.

🤥 DEEP FAKE PHOTO ANALYSIS: A tool under development at the University of Buffalo is effective at spotting 94% of fake images. It works by analysing light reflecting in the eyes. A paper published by the research team reports that images of fake people are literally dead behind the eyes. Spotted Catherine Arrow.
🏚️ ZOOM EXIT: Bad connection, echo, dogs barking, an upset baby and a man crying are all audio samples that you can use to interrupt a Zoom call so that you can make your excuses and leave. Spotted Stephen Canning.
🖊️ LIVE CAPTIONING: Google Chrome’s new Live Caption feature provides real-time captions for audio playing on your device and works with videos, podcasts, and phone calls. The feature is exclusive to Android but Google is working on a version for Chrome desktop. Spotted Andrew Smith.
🗣️ TRANSCRIPTION TOOL: Otter is a voice-to-text apps that generates notes from live meetings and audio or video uploads. The first 600 minutes of transcription per month is free. Content is uploaded to the internet so check security policy. Spotted Stephen Waddington.
